Vision, Objectives and Mission Statement
With 54% of its total population under 25 years of age, India is walking into the future economy, dominated by data, digital, and other emerging technologies, with a huge demographic dividend.
However, despite these impressive numbers, only 25% of Indian graduates have employable skills, or are considered employable by the organised sector. Even of the employed workforce, almost 60% are considered to have some degree of un-employability, by Indian employers. Moreover, news surrounding layoffs and job losses is becoming quite common, inciting fear regarding the impact of automation and technological changes on jobs.
With the rise in highly-skilled work in emerging technological areas, knowledge work is increasing whereas routine work is decreasing. India owned the knowledge economy of the late 90s and early 2000s by leading the IT movement. This movement practically gave rise to, and empowered, the Indian middle class. Today, the world requires more and more job-relevant skills but the supply of these skills is facing an acute shortage as somehow, the Indian workforce has not been able to keep pace with these rapid changes affecting all industries as. The traditional education system often suffers from a lack of flexibility and therefore, outdated curricula. To be relevant in the new-age, one must learn continuously and on-the-job. This is the only way to ride this wave and build a career for the future. So, the question we need to be asking is – how do we skill ourselves for the new jobs that are being created?
Online education has offered an innovative solution to this. Our vision and mission at UOS is centred around addressing these very challenges that the jobs economy, corporations and working professionals face; and will continue to face as technology and automation keep changing the world as we know it. We need to redefine roles and jobs that are becoming redundant and we also believe that, collectively, we can provide a solution for this mammoth problem. We have taken a step towards financially supporting motivated individuals who want to upgrade their skills through some of the leading online education providers.
UOS will focus solely on
The challenge of upskilling more than 3 million IT professionals alone, certain types of jobs becoming defunct, and a shortage of nearly 2 lakh Data Analysts, 1.5-2 lakh opportunities in Digital Marketing and thousands coming up in the Product space, all point to the same phenomenon - upskilling is not an option anymore. UOS aims to aid the young Indian workforce to grab these opportunities and secure their future.
How it Works?
1. Who can receive the scholarship award
Motivated and ambitious individuals who have a clear career plan and growth path, and are committed to constantly upgrading themselves and their skill-sets in preparation for future-looking careers. Those who are looking to upskill but may not have adequate resources or time to go back to full-fledged offline education. Those who have realised the importance and need to stay relevant by upgrading in their current organisation or successfully transition to new areas of work or even start up their own venture.
UOS will also especially support and encourage women, retired or ex-members of all three armed forces, sportspersons who have represented India in the past and those with special needs, as the intention is not only to build the careers of tomorrow but also to build them equitably - in a gender-neutral and non-discriminatory manner, while giving an impetus to those who have fallen out of touch with mainstream working life but have rediscovered the drive and passion to make something out of their lives. These are the people that UOS will support with a full scholarship or award amount, with the sole condition of seeing tangible change in the form of a job or venture of the candidate.
2. Scholarship Committee
An internal committee has been put in place to take the final decision on applications that are shortlisted post meeting the mandatory eligibility criteria. This committee will be composed of leaders and subject matter experts in the fields of education, online education, skill training, entrepreneurship, etc, and other career experts. The committee will operate on an ongoing basis and may decide to conduct interview(s) post reviewing applications, before taking a final decision.
3. Scholarship period
There is no fixed timeline for giving out scholarships as the very nature of online means it is continuous and rolling. Applicants can apply at any time, but should provide enough time to the committee to take a decision. Hence, applications should be made at least 90 days prior to the start date of the Program the candidate wishes to enrol in, if applicable.
4. Outcome monitoring & evaluation
Measuring outcomes is an integral part of UOS. We want to ensure that only the most ambitious, intelligent and hard-working individuals avail of this scholarship. Those who are in true need of it and most importantly, want a high-growth career path or aspire to a leadership role. For this purpose, several measures will be employed to push the candidate to do his/her best and achieve the results as initially intended. These could include joint monitoring with the employer, collateral guarantee, as well as a presentation or report towards the end of the scholarship award period or Program, by the recipient. Further details have been enumerated in the Eligibility Criteria and Other Rules section. An UOS certificate will be provided on successful completion.
UOS encourages continuous upgradation of skills and lifelong learning. Any person can apply for, and avail, the scholarship more than once, if all conditions for receiving the scholarship grant are satisfied. However, no person shall receive a second grant before the expiry of a three year period.
6. Transparency and accountability
All legal and financial disclosures regarding UOS have been made on the website.
